Understand your options

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and may address separation of the abdominal wall when indicated. It differs from liposuction, which targets fat. The operation is intended for contouring rather than weight loss.

Choosing the extent of surgery

The amount and location of loose skin, muscle separation and previous scars influence whether a limited or more extensive approach is considered. A full tummy tuck typically involves a lower abdominal scar and may involve an incision around the navel. Ask to see where scars would sit on your body and what the procedure will not change.

Weight, pregnancy and candidacy

Stable weight and the ability to recover with practical support are important considerations. Future pregnancy or substantial weight changes may stretch the abdominal tissues again. Your physician evaluates health, nicotine use, clot risk and whether a hernia or other concern needs separate assessment.

Scars and surgical risks

Scars are permanent even though their appearance may change with time. Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, poor wound healing, skin or fat loss, altered sensation, blood clots and anesthesia complications. Combining a tummy tuck with other surgery can increase operative demands; suitability must be assessed rather than assumed.

Planning help at home

Recovery can affect standing, lifting, work and caregiving. Arrange help with children, pets and daily tasks. Ask about drains if used, dressings, compression and safe movement. Your team should provide instructions for follow-up and urgent symptoms; the absence of pain alone does not mean you are ready for unrestricted exercise.

Common questions

General education to prepare for your consultation. Individual recommendations belong with your physician.

Does a tummy tuck remove all stretch marks?

Only stretch marks on skin that is actually removed may be eliminated. Marks on remaining skin can persist; ask what is realistic for your anatomy.

Do I need liposuction as well?

Not necessarily. Fat distribution and skin excess are different concerns. Your physician may discuss one procedure, a combination or no surgery based on your assessment.

When can I lift my child or return to work?

The answer depends on the operation, healing and the physical demands involved. Obtain individual lifting and work restrictions before arranging childcare or leave.
