Understand your options

Breast augmentation aims to increase breast volume, most commonly with implants. Decisions involve your chest dimensions, existing tissue, preferred proportions and the long-term responsibilities of having implants. An augmentation is different from a breast lift.

Volume, position and implant choices

Implant size alone does not predict appearance or a particular bra cup. Implant type, profile, placement and incision location affect the plan. A lift may be discussed when skin laxity and nipple position are concerns; increasing volume does not reliably correct substantial sagging.

Understanding implant risks

Risks include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, capsular contracture, implant rupture and additional surgery. Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Discuss the FDA patient decision checklist, recommended monitoring and rare implant-associated cancers, including BIA-ALCL, with your surgeon before consent.

Health, screening and future plans

Your clinical consultation considers breast health, prior surgery, medications, nicotine use, pregnancy plans and expectations. Ask how implants may affect future breast imaging and whether breastfeeding could be affected. Continue age- and risk-appropriate breast screening through your healthcare professionals.

Recovery and long-term follow-up

Early swelling, tightness and temporary changes in appearance can occur. Ask about supportive garments, incision care, arm movements, lifting and return to exercise. Keep a record of the implant model and manufacturer. Discuss ongoing monitoring costs as well as the initial surgical quote.

Common questions

General education to prepare for your consultation. Individual recommendations belong with your physician.

Can I choose a guaranteed cup size?

No. Bra sizing varies and anatomy affects the result. Discuss proportions and tissue limitations rather than relying on a guaranteed cup size.

Will I eventually need another operation?

Possibly. Implants may require replacement or removal because of complications, changes in preference or other concerns. Ask about ongoing monitoring and future surgery costs.

Do implants also lift the breasts?

They add volume, but a breast lift treats excess skin and position. Some people may discuss both, with a separate assessment of the combined risks.
